Meet the changemakers!

Each participating ecosystem restoration project in the Ecosystem Restoration Community of the Southwestern Algarve is the confluence of a location, people, and actions working to assure improved soil quality, water availability, biodiversity, local livelihoods, and inspiration in the Barlavento region of Portugal.

Quinta Vale da Lama

Odiáxere

Quinta Vale da Lama is a 43-hectare farm applying regenerative agriculture and ecosystem restoration methodologies in a collaborative setting to improve soil quality, water availability, biodiversity, and local livelihoods. Key landscape areas include an organic market garden, dry fruit orchard, syntropic food forest, composting operation, and a variety of semi-arid zones undergoing restoration. Two nature- and regeneration-focused nonprofits are located here, as is the Casa Vale da Lama eco-resort.

Vinha Velha

Barão de São João

Vinha Velha is a diverse, 140 hectare, 2nd-generation organic farm dedicated to sustainable and regenerative living and working practices. The farming operation cultivates various types of vegetables throughout the year using the closed-farm circle concept, and animals on the farm are raised following biodynamic principles. A number of reforestation and landscape resiliency efforts are being undertaken around the property. The project also features holiday accommodations as well as educational programs.

Quinta do Jasmim

Bensafrim

Quinta do Jasmim is an educative and productive project aiming to infuse an interest to health resiliency, offering homegrown herbal medicines to the local community as well as a program of herbal workshops for children and adults. Our Mediterranean medicine garden is a conscious impulse to Biodiversity in an arid bushland area.

Restore Nature Foundation

Barão de São João

Restore Nature Foundation is working to regenerate native ecosystems in southern Portugal to make landscapes resilient, productive, and vibrant by increasing biodiversity, improving soil conditions, and restoring the water cycle. The Foundation works on holistic landscape regeneration and offers education and services that derive from its members experiences with regenerative frameworks and techniques to bring life back to degrading ecosystems.

Santuário da Machada

Bensafrim

Santuário da Machada focuses on the ecological and hydrological regeneration of a 13-hectare wild cork oak and medronho forest located on the upper slopes of the Ribeira de Bensafrim catchment. Surrounded by different examples of extractive land use and for decades damaged by cork oak machinery, the site is now part of a growing collective effort to restore the water cycle and envision a new and broader perspective on land use.

Quinta dos Três Figos

Quinta dos Três Figos is an organic farm project featuring a 4-hectare diversified fruit orchard and an additional 16-hectares of ecosystem regeneration works, with plans to produce vegetables and extensive goat breeding for fire prevention.

Burgau Ecovillage

African Peace Village

Burgau

African Peace Village creates sustainable business plans as opportunities for potential impact investments, addresses social issues at scale, and enhances biotic relationships between Africa and the World devoid of supremacy. We seek novel metrics for social and ecological impact, and offer practical hands-on learning and field trips to other local regenerative projects in Portugal.

Zambujeira de Fora is a 1.2-hectare family project located in the flat lands of Barão de São João, focusing on quality of life and ecosystem restoration. The land has a few different ecosystems, including an esteval on the higher ground, a sobreiral on the lower part, and bushy areas scattered around open spaces. The project engages in experimental successional agroforestry, with a focus on increasing plant diversity and density.

The project takes its name from the zambujeira, the wild olive tree found throughout the Algarve and Portugal.

Quinta do Horizonte is a 8.5-hectare project centered around the holy trinity of water, soil, and plants. It is a place for connection and regeneration with nature, where we honor the life processes that are the foundation of our world. We bring life back to degrading landscapes through an approach that is embedded in science and decades of practical experience by hundreds of visionaries from all over the world. It’s our belief that through careful analysis and planning, any land, farm or ecosystem can be restored!

Corte Medronheira is a 36 hectare land mainly covered with cork oaks, strawberry trees and pine trees. An extended family of kindred spirits, adults and children, willing to experience, listen, learn and embody regenerative experiences in an immersive and authentic way. This place is a temple, a sanctuary, a place of retreat and rest for those who arrive exhausted by modernity, a place to (re)learn what it means to belong and exist as part of a living and complex ecosystem.

Lagos Mais Verde

Lagos

Lagos Mais Verde is a citizens’ group promoting the creation and preservation of green spaces in Lagos in order to foster community well-being, environmental education, and urban regeneration. This movement was born out of a common desire to make Lagos a greener, healthier and more inclusive city – with natural spaces accessible to all ages.
